How to Set Up an URL for a Web Page (5 Steps)
Purchase a domain name from a registrar. By purchasing a domain name, you will register it as your own and be able to control where the domain resides. There are many registrars available such as GoDaddy, Register.com, Enom, Network Solutions and Dream Host, to name a few. Many registrars also provide web hosting and vice versa. Domain names typically cost between $2.00 to $10.00. per year, as of 2010. '.com' is the most expensive; '.net,' .org,' and '.info' are progressively less expensive.
Open a shared hosting account with a web host. If your website becomes popular, you can upgrade to a VSP or dedicated server at any time. Depending on the registrar you purchase your domain from, you may be able to also host with them. Web hosts typically charge on per month basis and offer options for monthly and yearly payment options. Some of the web hosts available are GoDaddy, DreamHost, HostMonster and HostGator.
Redirect your domain's nameservers, also referred to as 'DNS,' to the IP address of your web host's nameservers. Your domain will have two nameservers, 'Nameserver 1' and 'Nameserver 2.' Your web host will provide you with an address for each nameserver. The addresses will look like, 'ns1.your-host.com' and 'ns2.your-host.com.' You will need to refer to your web host/registrar for the specific address and instructions on how to redirect your domain's nameservers.
Upload the files for your web pages. Log in to the cPanel on your hosting account and go to the 'File Manager.' Click on your domain name to be taken to the root folder for its directory. Upload the index.html file and other associated files for your website. You may also choose to use your host's script installer to install a website automatically for you, which will vary in procedure from host to host.
Wait at least 24 hours for the change to take effect. Once the redirection of the nameservers has completed, your domain name will now be the URL of your web page. For example, by typing 'http://your-domain-name.com' you will be taken to your web page.

How to Create Your Own Domain Email
Find a domain to registrar. There are many domain registrar websites where you can register your own domain. You can visit a site like GoDaddy, DirectNIC or Network Solutions to buy a web domain. Use the website's search function to find a website that hasn't been registered and that is personal to you.
Select the type of domain you want. Domains come in several types. You can buy '.com,' '.net,' '.biz,' '.us,' or even '.tv.' Select the domain name and type, and purchase it from the site. The fee will vary depending on the type of domain you want.
Buy web hosting. Now that you have a domain, you need to find a host. You can normally buy hosting very cheaply from the company that you bought your domain from, or it may be included in the price of the domain. If you decide to use another host, you will need to follow their instructions for changing your nameservers to the ones that they specify.
Get an email program. Many people use Microsoft Outlook for an email client or you can use something else. You can even use some of the online Web-based services such as Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail that allow you to use the POP3 email protocol and download your email into their program for viewing from any computer.
Configure the email program. You will normally find account options under the 'Tools' or 'Options' menu of your email program. This is where you tell the program where to retrieve your email. Use your username and password, as well as your email server information -- provided by your Web hosting company -- to set up your email accounts.
Test your settings. Send yourself some email from another account and make sure that you can send and receive email properly. If you can, you are ready to start giving out your new email account.

How to Create a Professional Web Site
Purchase a domain name, which is the address for the website. Inexpensive and reputable sites to purchase domains include GoDaddy.com and Namecheap.com, but there are others. Choose the right domain name to give the site a more professional and branded look.
Sign up for web hosting. When running a professional website, it is important the site does not crash on customers. Check for either VPS or dedicated servers. Common sites to consider are ServInt.net or ThePlanet.com.
Create your website pages. It is important to include a 'Contact' page and an 'About' page. The 'Contact' page should include a phone number and an email. The 'About' page should explain what the company and its origins. If you offer a certain product or service, include a page on that as well.
Choose neutral colors and avoid flashy graphics. In addition, the colors should mesh well. A professional designer can help you choose.
Upload the files to the web host with an FTP client such as Filezilla-project.com. Depending on the size of the files, this should be accomplished in a very short amount of time.

How to Reserve Domain Names
Select a company that registers domain names. There are many to chose from, including GoDaddy, Network Solutions, NameCheap and MyDomain (See Resources). There are several criteria that will influence your choice:What is the cost to reserve a domain name? How often do you have to renew the name?Does the site offer any discounts to reserve multiple variations (.com, .org, .net, etc.)?Does the site offer any discounts to run your site on its server?
Decide what domain extension you want to use. There are many to chose from, all intended for specific purposes and costing different amounts. Some of the more popular ones are:.com (commercial site).net (network site).org (organization).edu (educational).gov (U.S. government).biz (businesses).info (informational)Many Web developers purchase many different extensions so that no matter what someone types, their page will come up.
Decide your domain name. It should be as short and concise as possible so that it is easy to remember. For example, www.johnsmithsstotallyawesomesite.com is clunky and easy to type incorrectly. The name www.johnsmith.com is more user-friendly.
Check whether your chosen domain name and extension are available. Most domain-name companies have a search on their main page. If the name is not available, try a similar variation or go with a second choice.
Enter your personal and payment information, following the on-screen instructions with the company you have chosen, to reserve your domain name.
