How to Start a Sewing Business on the Web (7 Steps)

Choose your website name and register your domain name. Your domain name, which will be your website address, will likely be your business name followed by a .com.
Choose a web hosting service. Find a company that combines domain registration and web hosting.
Design your website. Many companies have design services. Clients either select from a pre-designed template or a professionally designed site. Using a pre-designed template will save time and money. Many domain registration and web hosting companies offer website designs as well.
Make it easy for people to pay you. You will need a shopping cart for your website that accepts payments from customers. Online services such as Paypal and credit card collection services will help you collect money. These services take a small portion of your profits for providing a shopping cart.
Set up a system for shipping products. Though orders may not come in immediately, you need to be prepared to mail your merchandise. Go to the post office to get estimates for how much shipping costs for your products. Make sure you list shipping costs on your site and figure that into your prices.
Make extra items. Having an inventory of items to replace sold items will save time.
Get the word out. Write articles for websites and magazines. Start a blog. Writing on a regular basis gets your name out on the web. Visit forums where people are discussing sewing and use your website's name in signatures. Don't forget word of mouth as well. Tell everybody you know or meet about your online sewing business.

How to Host Appetizers for a Progressive Dinner Party

Find out from the party organizers how many people will be attending. Plan what appetizers and drinks you will serve. Restrict your food choices to finger food, chips and dips.
Provide adequate parking in front of your house for the day of the party. Progressive dinner party attendants may carpool together, but do what you can to make parking for many cars as easy as possible.
Get out dishes and utensils ahead of time, especially if the party is starting at a different location. Have your platters and serving dishes set up and put them in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap. Get out the drinks and mixers you will be serving if you are serving cocktails. Set up chairs, decorations and anything else you want to have out for the party.
If you start at a different location, leave early so you can prepare for your leg of the party. Go home and take your platters out of the refrigerator and get everything set up for the guests' arrival.
Keep your eye on the time during the party. Progressive dinner parties are on a schedule and you'll need to let the guests know when it's time to wrap things up and head to the next location.

How to Make an Official Website

Obtain permission to create an official website. Unless you are creating an official website for your own venture, you must obtain permission before even going to work on the site. Talk to the person or group that you wish to create an official website about. Pitch your idea to them, and make sure that they don't already have an official website and that they are interested in you creating one.
Register a domain. Registering a domain rather than hosting somewhere else makes your website look far more professional. If you are creating an official website for a person, band or product, having your own domain is a must. Think of a catchy title that is easy to remember. Then choose a domain registration service, and register your site on the Web.
Find a hosting service. Once you have a domain, you will also need a hosting service. Hosting services keep all the information for your website on a server so that it can be accessed by people on the Web. Some domain registration services also host but may not have prices and services that meet your needs. Do a little research, and find out what hosting service is right for you.
Download website creation software. A number of free programs exist for creating content for your official website, such as Joomla! and NVU. Download one of them to avoid tedious hours spent coding by hand.
Create content. The fun part of creating an official website is making the content. At the very least, you will need a banner and a landing page. The banner should be something visually interesting, the logo of the product or band, or a logo that you design yourself if one does not already exist. Use your website creation software to craft a professional-looking official website. You will probably want to include things like a biography or an about page, a news page, and a resume, bibliography, discography, or other representation of the subject's professional history. Media, such as music, videos, or product documentation or demonstration, can also be helpful.
Upload your content. Your final content files need to be uploaded to your host. This can be done using an FTP server or by using the control panel provided by your hosting service.
Update name servers. Go to your host, and find your name server information. Copy and paste this information, and insert it into the name server information field on your domain service. This will direct your domain to the content at the hosting service.

How to Build a Web Site Step

Brainstorm the site's themes, ideas and contents. Most sites are text-heavy and based on informative content, such as how-to guides and research. Other sites may be focused around an interactive element, such as a message board and online forum.
Choose a paid web host. Hosting plans for basic websites can start at a price as low as several dollars per month, though this price can vary by service provider and be exponentially more as you add more services and features. Various companies offer basic web hosting plans for new sites, such as 1and1 and GoDaddy (see Resources). Most plans can also be upgraded with more features as the site grows.
Select a domain name. This is the address that individuals type into their browser to access the site you've built. Some service providers, such as 1and1, include the domain name with the hosting plan. Choose a name that is simple and easy to remember, and one that also represents the theme or purpose of the site. Keep your future goals in mind. For example, don't choose a dog-specific site name if you are starting a dog care site but plan to expand it to include other types of pets.
Plan the general page design of the site you wish to build. Sites are made up of specific components, the main features being the actual content and the navigation. Typically, the navigational features (for example, site links, search bars, etc.) are found at the top and left-hand side of the page. The empty area is typically the page contents. Sketch out the design on a blank page of paper so that you can envision what the final product will look like.
Build the site. You may use a website building software, such as Adobe Dreamweaver (see Resources). Your web host may also provide automated tools to help generate a webpage. If you are confident in your knowledge of HTML and manual website coding, you may even choose to use a basic text editor and write the code by hand. Individuals often benefit from reading an HTML resource book for the basic principles and tags for building a website. Such books are available at your local library, bookstore or online at a retailer such as Amazon.
Check that each page you've built for the site is compliant with W3C web standards (see Resources). All pages must begin with the
tag and end with the appropriate closing tag,
. Likewise, all opening tags within the two HTML codes must have alternate closing tags (accomplished by repeating the tag and inserting a forward-slash into the first portion of the code).
Upload the finished website to your web host. You may use the host's file browser, which is accessible when you login to your webhosting account. However, most web designers typically upload finished sites using an FTP program such as Cyberduck or Fetch (on a Mac) or SmartFTP (for a PC). The FTP program will connect to your server, and files may be uploaded by dragging and dropping the file on your computer into the FTP software's interface.
