How to Install Magento on 1And1 VPS (16 Steps)

Log into your 1and1 control panel according to the instructions you received when you set up your VPS account. Click 'Domains' in the control panel to make sure the domain you want to use with Magento is properly set up on your VPS account. Change the nameservers in your domain registration account to match your VPS nameservers, if necessary, before adding your domain to the list of domains you host on your server.
Click the 'Server administration' icon in the control panel menu. Wait a few seconds for the administration icons to appear. Click the 'Server access data' icon to obtain the log-in information for your Plesk and Virtuozzo server control panels as well as your SSH log-in.
Log in to your Virtuozzo control panel and click the 'System services' icon. Click the 'PSA' and 'mysqlid' icons and start the respective services. Enable auto-start when starting both services.
Set up your domain on your Plesk control panel if you have not done so already. Log in to your Plesk control panel and click the 'Domains' icon followed by the 'Create domain' prompt. Wait a second for the text fields to appear and enter your domain information according to the instructions. Create your FTP account in the specified text field and click 'Next.'
Wait for the next page to appear. Uncheck the 'PHP safe_mode' check box and click 'Finish.'
Download the latest version of Magento from the download page. Choose the Community Edition page for the free version or the Enterprise or Professional Edition page if you have purchased one of the paid Magento packages. Enter your user name and password in the proper fields of the log-in page to access your Enterprise or Professional account.
Uncompress the '.tar' archive containing the Magento files by right-clicking it if you are using a Mac computer or by opening your archiving software and choosing the name and location of your '.tar' file if you are using Windows.
Launch your FTP client. Enter your domain, username and password in the appropriate fields and click the server connection button or prompt. Choose the folder into which you have uncompressed your Magento files as the local folder and the directory into which you want to install Magento as your remote folder.
Drag the files from the local folder into the remote folder and wait about five minutes for the transfer to complete.
Type your domain address, including a slash and the name of the directory into which you installed Magento, if necessary, into your browser text window. Proceed with the on-screen installation procedure if you do not see an error message. Complete the remaining steps if you see an error message stating you have an invalid PHP version.
Connect to your server with SSH through the 1and1 control panel or with an SSH client. Use your root user name and password as provided in Step 2.
Type the following command at the first SSH prompt you see after entering your information. Omit the quotation marks and the period at the end: 'wget -q -O - http://www.atomicorp.com/installers/atomic.sh |sh.'
Type 'yum update' without the quotes as soon as the next prompt appears. Choose 'No' when you are asked whether you want to install the updates.
Type the following commands and select 'Yes' after each subsequent prompt appears:
yum update php
yum update mcrypt
yum update mhash
yum update php-mcrypt
yum update php-mhash
Restart Apache by typing ' /etc/init.d/httpd restart' without the quotation marks as soon as the last 'yum update' is finished.
Type the full domain address for your Magento installation in your browser text window. Follow the on-screen installation prompts. Repeat Steps 11 to 15 if you still see an error message.

How to Start an Organic Store Online

Decide what types of organic products you want to sell. There are lots of options--chocolates, candies, bath and body products, cosmetics, clothing, baby items, food mixes, teas and coffees, herbs, jams and sauces.
Find out what permits you will need for your store. Requirements vary from state to state, but if you are selling food products that you produce, you will need a food handling permit and, most likely, access to a commercial kitchen. To sell items bought wholesale, you may need a resale license. No matter which types of organic products you sell, you will need a Federal Tax Identification Number, also known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Contact your local IRS field office or go to IRS.gov to learn how to get one.
Get an assumed name certificate, also known as a DBA ('doing business as') license, from your city or county clerk's office. Unless you are using your legal name as your organic company's name, you will need this certificate. For example, if your name is Joe Smith, you can name your company 'Joe Smith Organics' without getting a DBA. If you wanted to name the company 'Juicy Organics,' you would need a DBA.
Purchase a domain name and website hosting from a company such as GoDaddy.com. Try to get a hosting plan that allows you unlimited bandwidth. You can also choose to use an e-commerce service such as BuyItSellIt.com or Shopify.com.
Design your company's website. You can either do this with a website builder, which is available through many hosting companies, or hire a graphic and web designer.
Establish a wholesale account with an organic products distributor. To do this, you will either need to provide your tax ID number or a copy of your resale permit. Depending upon which types of products you want to sell, there are many reputable organic companies such as Sckoon (baby clothing), Organics Wholesale (personal care items), Yummy Earth (confections and candies) or eSutras (herbs, supplements and aromatherapy).
Designate a storage space for your products--you may need to lease out a small office or warehouse space, depending on what and how much you sell. Not all products can be feasibly stored in a home. For example, if you want to sell organic jams, you should have them stored in a temperature-controlled, dry warehouse instead of your basement. If you want to sell organic baby clothes, you may be able to get away with storing your inventory in a spare closet.
Price your products, accounting for not only the cost of the item, but overhead costs such as shipping supplies, website maintenance and labor. For example, if you buy a bottle of organic spice wholesale for $3, you could sell it for $7.95. This would cover the cost of the item and help account for your other expenses. To remain competitive, other items such as clothing, may only have a 30 percent to 50 percent markup.

How to Transform a 'Brick Mortar' into an E

Hire a Web designer who suits your business needs. Since your business is moving to the Internet, this is the one of the most critical components. Without a good website design with an intuitive layout, you could lose many potential customers.
Research a Web hosting service that specializes in your field. When it comes to the company that keeps your store alive, you want the best you can get. Since the business is moving to an online realm, you won't be able to see problems like you would in a physical realm. Your business will be relying heavily on your IT department and a third-party hosting company.
Create a virtual inventory. Even though all of your products will be moving through the Internet, a brick-and-mortar building may still be required, unless of course you have the capability of shipping directly from the manufacturer or you're selling a product or service that doesn't require an inventory. Make sure your virtual inventory matches what you have in stock. Set up a an electronic system to scan a product when it leaves your business and goes to your customers. This scan should remove the item from your virtual inventory and list an item as unavailable on your website if the quantity is moved to zero.
Warehouse your product. Depending on your business needs, you may need a warehouse to hold and sort your inventory. If you have a small inventory with small items, you may be able to run this out of your garage. Either way, you will want to set up accounts with package delivery companies or the United States Postal Service for your shipping needs. If you run a business out of your home, you may qualify for tax breaks on the area of your home that you use for business purposes.
