How to Make a Proxy Website (6 Steps)

Open an account at a web host that allows proxy websites. Many hosting companies do not allow proxies because they can generate a large amount of traffic that overloads the servers. Those that do allow proxy websites will typically prefer that you have a Virtual Private Server (VPS) or a dedicated server. Most hosts do not allow web proxies on a shared server.
Obtain a copy of PHProxy. This script acts as the software to power your proxy site. PHProxy is available free of charge, so anyone can make a proxy website without spending a lot of money.
Log into the control panel for your web hosting account. Create a MySQL database that will be used by the PHProxy script. Make note of the database name, user name and password that is associated with the database. This information is needed to configure the script to communicate with the database.
Edit the config.php file that is included with the script. Open the file with a HTML editor so that you can edit the contents of the file and save the new copy. Use Windows Notepad if you do not have a HTML editor. Simply open the file, edit the website name, website address, database name, database user name and database password. Save the file after the information has been edited.
Use an FTP program to upload all of the files to your hosting account. You can download a free copy of Filezilla FTP if you do not already have a program. Simply upload all of the files and folders included with PHProxy to your web hosting account. Your proxy website should now be operational.
Read the documentation that is included with PHProxy. Follow the instructions in the documentation to customize your script, such as changing colors, page layout or other visual elements. This will help you make a FTP website that stands out.

How to Map a Drive to a Web Site (8 Steps)

Open Windows Explorer by running 'explorer.exe' from the Run dialog box. You can bring up the Run dialog box by pressing the 'Windows' key and the letter 'R' at the same time. In the available text area, type 'explorer.exe' and press 'Enter.'
In Windows Explorer, click on the 'Tools' menu near the top, and select the 'Map Network Drive' option. This will open the Map Network Drive dialog box.
Click on the link that will allow you to connect to a network server or website, located beneath the drive letter and folder selection boxes. This may be listed as 'Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server' or 'Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures,' depending on your version of Microsoft Windows. This will open the 'Add Network Place Wizard.'
Click the 'Next' button on the Add Network Place Wizard. When prompted to choose where to create the network place, click 'Choose another (or custom) network location' and then click 'Next.'
In the Internet or network address text area, type your FTP address and click 'Next.' Typically this will be 'ftp://www.yourdomain.com' or 'ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com,' where 'yourdomain' is the name of the website you're attempting to access. Your FTP log-in information can be acquired by contacting your domain hosting service.
If your FTP allows anonymous login, make sure the 'Log on anonymously' box is checked. If your FTP requires a user name and password, uncheck the 'Log on anonymously' box and type your user name in the provided text area and click 'Next.'
Type a name to identify this network place, then click 'Next.'
Make sure the 'Open this network place when I click Finish' box is checked. The first time the network place is opened, you will be prompted for your FTP password. The network place can now be accessed from My Computer or from Windows Explorer.

How to Open an Internet Store

Purchase a domain name for your store. A domain name is like the street address to a business. For example 'www.BestBuy.com' or 'www.apple.com' are domain names. You can purchase domain names from sites like 'godaddy.com' and pay a yearly amount. Prices for domains can be as low as $1.99 to $14.
Purchase web hosting for your online store. A web hosting company provides a shared or dedicated server for your website. Search for web hosts specifically for e-commerce sites--for example, ehostpros.com. Web hosting fees can start at $4 a month.
Find a web designer for your online store. A web designer will take your concept, images, and ideas for your website, then create your online store for you. You can locate web designers by going to freelance sites, such as 'Guru.com,' 'Elance.com' or 'getafreelancer.com.'
Determine what method of payments you can and will accept. PayPal and Google checkout are third-party processors that will accept checks and credit cards on your behalf for a percentage. Approval can take place in minutes.
Consider opening a merchant account. Instead of a third-party processor, such as PayPal, which costs more, you can actually open your own merchant account to accept credit card payments. You then can deposit funds into your checking account. You can go through your local bank to determine if it offers merchant accounts.
Advertise your online store. You can create banner ads, purchase ads via Google or utilize pay per click advertising. Pay-per-click advertising is a form of marketing where you only pay a certain amount of money if customers click on your ad to see your website. You can also advertise via online forums and online magazines.

How to Import an Existing Site to Dreamweaver FTP

Open Dreamweaver, and then click 'Site' from the main menu. Click on 'New Site' from the site menu to start setting up the new site.
Enter the name for the site that will appear in the Dreamweaver site manager on the 'Site' tab. You can use the website's domain name as the site name to help identify the site. Click on the folder icon next to the 'Local Site Folder' box, and create a directory on your computer's hard disk to store the site files. This directory mirrors the site directory on the remote server.
Click on 'Servers' from the menu on the left of the window to view the 'Servers' tab, and then click on the '+' button at the bottom of the box.
Type in a server name to identify the server. Select how Dreamweaver should connect to the server from the 'Connect Using' drop-down menu, such as through FTP or SFTP. Leave this set to 'FTP' if you are unsure of the connection method. Type in the FTP address of the server, as a domain name or IP address, and enter the FTP user name and password in the relevant boxes.
Type in the directory that corresponds to the root directory of the website in the 'Root Directory' box. For example, if you have to change to a directory named 'public_html' to upload files to the website, enter '/public_html/' in the box. If you are automatically located in the root directory of the website when you log in through FTP, leave the box blank. Type in the root URL of the website in the 'Web URL' box, such as 'http://www.domain.com/.'
Click the 'Test' button to test the FTP connection. You should see a notification appear that the connection has been successful. If the connection fails, double-check all the settings with your Web host to ensure they are correct. Click the 'Save' button to save the settings and close the server window. Click the 'Save' button again on the main window to save the site and close.
Select the new site from the site drop-down menu on the Files panel. Press 'F8' to display the panel if it is not already visible. Select 'Remote Server' from the drop-down menu at the top right of the Files panel, and then click the 'Connect' button to connect to the server. You see all the files held on the FTP server for the site displayed in the 'Remote Server' box.
Click on the file or directory at the top of the remote files list to select it, and then hold down the 'Shift' key while clicking the last file or directory to select all files. Right-click on the highlighted files and click 'Get' to download the files to your computer. You can now edit the files in Dreamweaver and upload changed files to the remote server using the 'Put' command.

How to Set Up a BBS Internet Server (5 Steps)

Determine what software you will use to manage your BBS. Bulletin boards use special software that manages user accounts and provides the system operator with a wide range of administrative controls. There are many BBS software programs to choose from. Synchronet (see Resources) is a popular open source software that can be used free of charge. Impulse BBS and Ezycom are other options that will allow you to administer your own BBS server. Review the available options to determine which contain the features you require, and which are priced within your budget.
Acquire a server that can be used to host your BBS software. Refer to the minimum system requirements for the software you are using and make sure the server you select will meet or exceed those requirements. You will typically need to have either a Win 32 or Unix-based system to use as a server. This can be either a computer in your home or office, or a dedicated server at a hosting company. A standard web hosting account will not work for most BBS software programs, but you can select a hosting package for a dedicated Unix server and use that to host your BBS software. The dedicated server is necessary because this is the only way most hosts will allow you to install your own software on the server side.
Install the control panel software on your server. WHM and Virtuozzo are the most common control panel programs to use on a server. These will typically already be installed if you have a dedicated hosting package. Having a control panel installed is important, because it will allow you to have remote access to the server.
Install the BBS server. Use the control panel software to access the server. Go to the installation section of the control panel and follow the onscreen prompts to install your BBS software. The software will also be configured during the installation process, allowing you to set the basic features, such as the maximum number of concurrent users and how long a user can remain inactive before being automatically logged out.
Restart the server to complete the installation process.

How to Create a Safe Website (5 Steps)

Create strong passwords for you website's back end, sometimes called the administration page. This is very important because if a cyber criminal can get access to the back end, then he can pretty much do anything he wants, since anything can be done to your site from its back end. Strong passwords include both upper and lowercase letters and numbers and are at least eight characters long. Many website administrators follow a stricter policy when securing their sites' back ends; they make their passwords at least fifteen characters.
Create strong passwords for any FTP, file transfer protocol, accounts that have access to your web server. Follow the same guidelines as you would for you site's back end, but you must also make sure that, if you have given FTP accounts to others, that they do not make simpler passwords for their own convenience.
Update your server operating system regularly. If you are leasing server space from a web hosting provider, then you will not have to worry about this, since your hosting provider will take care of it for you. However, if you are maintaining your own server, then you should check for security updates at least once every two weeks; consult your operating system's documentation for details.
Follow good security practices on all computers that you use FTP to your server from or log into the back end from. No matter how strong your passwords are, a key logger is going to compromise your site's security. This includes having a strong anti-malware suite, including a firewall, and keeping it up to date. Popular anti-malware suites include McAfee, Norton and Vipre.
Trust your users. If you start receiving feedback complaining that there seem to be random glitches on your site or that it is loading slowly or that your site is sending out a lot of spam, then there is a chance that your site has come under attack. Listening to these warnings can save you a lot of time and trouble.

How to Create an HTML Input Box and Output to Another Page

Open the HTML source code page into which you desire to place the form containing a 'textarea' input box. In this example, you will be using 'sometext.html' as the HTML source page. The separate page with PHP code will be called 'displaysometext.php.' Both pages will be stored on the Web hosting server where your website is located.
Create the form section within the HTML source code, and tell the form that the data entered by the user will be submitted to the external PHP-enabled page. In the case of this example, the user data will be submitted to displaysometext.php. Enter the following line between the
and the
tags of the HTML page.Save the document to your computer as sometext.html and upload it to your Web hosting server.
Open a new page in your text editor and enter the following six lines of text.
Display Some Text PHP Script Page
?>
Save the page as displaysometext.php
Enter the following lines between the '
' lines that tells PHP to accept the text from the input box of the origination page. Remember that the name of the submit operation was 'comment.' When the user submits the form, that label will be submitted as the identifier for the text the user entered. The lines to accept this information should appear as follows.if(isset($_POST['submit'])){
$usercomments = $_POST['comment'];'
Have your PHP script do something with the text the user entered. This can be something as simple as printing to the Web browser what the user entered on the original page. In this example, type the following three lines.echo 'The information you entered was as follows:';
echo $usercomments;
}
Save the 'displaysometext.php' page code to your computer, then upload it into the same directory of the Web hosting server that contains HTML page containing the input box.
Point your browser to the HTML page that accepts the user input. That page, in this example, would be 'sometext.html'. Enter some text into the input box, then click the 'Submit Comments' button below it. Note that the small PHP code snippet in the 'displaysometext.php' page processes and displays everything you entered on a new Web page.

How to Create a Forum With HTML

Buy a domain name. You can think of the domain name as being the address for your internet web site. Whenever a surfer types your domain into the address bar on their web browser, they will be taken to your web site. Therefore, buying a domain name is the first step in the process of creating your forum. If you already have a web site and domain name, then you can skip this step.
Obtain web hosting. Now that you have a domain name, you will need to have a web hosting service to host the files associated with your forum. A web host is essentially a company that owns servers and other computer hardware, and allows you to lease space on their servers for a small monthly fee. The cost will depend on how much disk space and bandwidth your forum will require. Most new forums require few system resources, so you can always start out with the most basic hosting plan, and then upgrade your account as your forum gains popularity.
Create a MySQL database for your forum. After you have an account with a web host, they will provide you with access to a Control Panel on their server, which you will use to manage your account. From the Control Panel, there should be a link or button that you can click to create a new MySQL database. This is a very simple process that basically just requires you to fill out a short form and to let the server create the database for you. Once it has been created, you will be given the database name, user name and user password.
Choose a forum script to use on your web site. There are a large number of forum scripts to choose from. The three most popular are Vbulletin, phpBB and Simple Machines Forum (SMF). Vbulletin carries an annual fee for use of the software, but that money is used to hire professional developers to constantly work on improving the forum script. Both phpBB and SMF are free forum scripts that have received a large amount of international recognition for providing high quality message board software without charging anything for the product.
Install the script for your forum. After selecting a forum script in the previous step, download the files for the script and upload them to your web hosting account. The easiest way is to use an FTP program, such as SmartFTP. Once the files have been uploaded to the server, simply visit your site by typing the domain name into your browser’s address bar. The installation script should begin to run automatically. You will be prompted for the database name, user name and user password that you were given when you created the database during Step 3. Remember to delete the installation directory from your server after you have installed the forum. This will be a folder titled either “install” or “installation”. Simply right click on the folder from your FTP software, then select delete, and click “ok” when asked if you are sure.
Configure your forum. After your forum has been installed, log in to the forum using the administrator user name and password that was created during the installation process. This will take you into the administrative control panel, which is not seen by normal forum visitors. This is where you will create forum categories, define how many messages per page, set user permission and make other configurations that will govern how your forum runs. Once your forum has been configured, it is ready to be used by the general public.

How to Start a Devotional or Inspirational Website

Secure a domain name for your devotional/inspirational website. A domain name will cost you $10 or less per year. To secure a domain name, visit a domain name registrar, such as GoDaddy, Network Solutions or NetFirms. In order to earn a better search engine ranking, try to incorporate the word 'Devotional' or 'Inspirational' in your domain name. For instance, instead of using the domain name janesnuggets.com, you can use janesinspirationalnuggets.com.
Find server space on the web for your devotional/inspirational website. Consider using a blog site for server space. By using blog hosting instead of traditional web hosting, you won't get frustrated with the technical stuff while trying to put your inspirational pieces online. A blog site will also keep your inspirational pieces organized and archived by date. Blog sites you can use are WordPress, TypePad, and SiteGround. You will have to sign up for an account in order to use the blog hosting sites.
Connect the domain name that was purchased in step 1 to your website. This is done during the sign-up process.
Select a template (background) for your devotional/inspirational website. The blog sites that are listed in the step 2 will provide a variety of templates to choose from.
Start adding content to your devotional/inspirational website. To do this, click on the option to create a 'New' article. You will be able to upload inspirational pictures to go along with your devotional content.
Submit the domain name for your devotional/inspirational website to search engines. If you don't your website won't be found by those who are searching for inspirational content. You can use websites such as Submit Express and Free Web Submission to submit your site to numerous search engines at one time.
Post new content on a regular basis. If you are inconsistent, readers are likely to stop visiting your website and move on to another that can deliver consistently.

How to Make an Online Radio Station for Free (3 Steps)

Use the software ubroadcast to broadcast online. Ubroadcast allows you to set up an online radio station for free and broadcast live. However, other users must download the ubroadcast client before they can listen to your station.
Set up a Shoutcast broadcasting server. Shoucast is a free program that also allows for online radio broadcasting. Shoutcast allows you to either broadcast directly from your own computer, or from a third-party Shoutcast host that hosts your program on its servers. It does not require special software for listeners to use.
Create a podcast using sound software such as Audacity and use a podcast hosting service such as MyPodCast to host the podcast. While not a live Internet broadcast, Podcasts have an advantage in that they can be downloaded to the PC and played back anytime, unlike a radio broadcast, which can only be heard once unless you record it.

How to Build a Website Like Craigslist (4 Steps)

Consider using an open-source blogging software such as WordPress. These software platforms allow for the incorporation of widgets designed by third-party developers. Some of these plugins will allow for the posting of user content such as classified advertising. While the approach may not be very versatile, it is probably the simplest way to accomplish the task of accepting and posting web-based classifieds.
Research the opportunities offered by popular content management systems. If you don't have experience programing with a server-side scripting language or if you are not familiar with relational database programs then you will probably want to use a pre-programmed content management system which can be customized to your needs. Two of the leading content management programs which you should consider using are Joomla and Drupal. Neither of these programs charge for their use; however, you should spend the time to become familiar with each product prior to investing the time and energy to customize their system.
Develop the user-facing framework for your users. You will need to have a working knowledge of XHTML and CSS. These two coding systems can be written in a basic text editor and will allow you to design the structure which will appear on your users' browser screens. If you need assistance with these two languages then you should take advantage of any number of XHTML and CSS online tutorials which will explain the features available.
Deploy the server-side back-end scripting language and database program. You will need to process dynamic data which will need to be updated depending on user input. To do this it will be necessary to use a server-side scripting language such as PHP, Java, Pearl, Python or Microsoft's ASP.NET language. These scripts will take the data entered by the user and place it in the database. They will also retrieve the data upon request and present in in the XHTML and CSS framework which was mentioned above. You will also need to set up a relational database to securely house the data.

How to Upload a Website to GoDaddy

Open your FTP client and type in your GoDaddy hosting account username and password. If you want to avoid using a third-party FTP client, you can use the built-in GoDaddy FTP client; however, this is not recommended for large files. To access the GoDaddy FTP client, go to 'Hosting' under 'My Products.' Click 'Manage Account' by your hosting account. Under 'Content', click 'FTP Client.'
Navigate to the folder on your server where your new website files will be stored. In most circumstances, use the initial directory.
Go to the folder on your hard drive that contains your website’s HTML files.
Once you have successfully logged in to your server through the FTP client, drag and drop the files from your hard drive to the server. Make sure you have an index.html file; this is the initial page of your website that will be seen when someone types in your domain name. For example, www.yoursite.com/index.html is equivalent to www.yoursite.com.
Visit your domain name to see if the files uploaded correctly. Under most circumstances, your site should be live instantaneously. Refresh your browser if you do not see any changes.
Troubleshoot any problems that arise. Click on every link, particularly internal links, to see if they are working properly. If they are not working, go back to the raw HTML file and correct them as needed. All link and image paths should be relative to the domain and not paths on your computer. For instance, a header image might read file:///C|/my documents/photos/header1.jpg in the source code when it should read /images/header1.jpg or http://www.yoursite.com/images/header1.jpg.
